Jerry Cates (1984 – 2008)

Jerry Cates bought the Goodrum House in 1984, subdivided the north end of the property and sold two lots totaling two acres. The resulting demolition affected the landscape and hardscape: a shaded axial walk that led from the main terrace to a greenhouse and camellia house was demolished. The south wall that connected those that fronted Arden and Habersham roads was also demolished.

In 1984 the property was host to the Decorators’ Show House. The boxwoods that lined front drive were removed and replaced with American box. Two freestanding brick screening walls were added in the north and east lawns. Stairs and a stone path from the circular court to the sunken garden were built. On the interior of the home, the walls of the main parlor were painted, as was the trim of the hallway and the Chippendale stair railing. The wainscot and trim of the dining room was painted.
